Tips to Reduce Energy Cost:
- Change filters in your heating and cooling system monthly. Do not cover vents or returns to maintain proper air flow.
- Set the temperature on your water heater to 120 degrees F.
- Use an insulating blanket or wrap the water heater with insulation. Insulate the first 5 ft of pipe coming from your water heater.
- Caulk and weather strip around windows and door to prevent drafts.
- Seal gaps around pipes or wiring where they come into the home.
- Turn off lights, electronics, and appliances when not in use.
- Run the dishwasher only when it is full. Use the air dry option for drying dishes.
- In the winter months, set your thermostat to 68 degrees. Summer months set to 78 degree.
- Make sure the damper in your fireplace is closed to avoid sending heated/cooled air out the chimney.
- Take short/cooler showers to cut down on hot water use.
- Set the refrigerator temperature to 35 – 39 degrees & the freezer between 0 – 5 degrees. Keep the coils vacuumed and clean of debris so that they operate efficiently.
- If replacing appliances or water heaters, look for the energy star rating to select an energy efficient option.
- Check your insulation. Adding insulation to your attic, walls and crawl space will improve your homes efficiency.
- Replace incandescent light bulbs with more efficient LED or compact florescent bulbs, they use less energy and last 10 times longer.
